About Aqua

Aqua is a Danish-Norwegian pop group that rose to international fame in the late 1990s with their infectious bubblegum Europop sound and playful, tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Originally formed in the early 1990s as Joyspeed by keyboardists Claus Norreen and Søren Rasted, the group expanded when rapper René Dif and Norwegian vocalist Lene Nystrøm—whom Dif met during her cruise ship performances—joined, completing the quartet. Their breakthrough came with the 1997 hit "Barbie Girl," a catchy Euro-dance anthem filled with witty double entendres about the iconic dolls. The single dominated charts worldwide, including four weeks at number one in the UK and a top ten position on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, propelling their debut album "Aquarium" (1997) to multi-platinum success across Europe, Australia, and Canada.

Following their sophomore album "Aquarius" (2000), which produced hits like "Cartoon Heroes" and "Around the World," Aqua faced a high-profile lawsuit by toy company Mattel over "Barbie Girl." The case was dismissed in 2002, as the song was protected as a parody. The band temporarily disbanded in 2001, pursuing individual projects before reuniting in 2008. Their third album, "Megalomania" (2011), marked a more mature electronic pop direction, reaching number one in Denmark. Aqua’s enduring influence was revived in 2023 when "Barbie Girl" was sampled in "Barbie World" by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice for the soundtrack of Greta Gerwig’s *Barbie* film, introducing their signature sound to a new generation and cementing their legacy in pop culture history.
