About Judy Garland

Judy Garland, born Frances Ethel Gumm in 1922 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, was a prodigious talent whose career spanned vaudeville, film, radio, television, and live performance. Beginning her stage journey at just two years old alongside her sisters in the Gumm Sisters, later renamed the Garland Sisters, she quickly emerged as the standout with her powerful, emotionally rich voice. After moving to California, Garland signed with MGM in 1935, launching a solo film career highlighted by her unforgettable role as Dorothy in *The Wizard of Oz* (1939). Her performance of "Over the Rainbow" became an enduring classic, earning her a juvenile Academy Award and establishing her as a Hollywood icon.

Throughout the 1940s, Garland starred in beloved MGM musicals such as *Meet Me in St. Louis*, *Easter Parade*, and *The Harvey Girls*, while also enjoying a successful recording career with Decca Records. Despite personal struggles with addiction and intense studio pressures that ended her MGM contract in 1950, Garland reinvented herself as a concert performer. Her triumphant stage returns included legendary engagements at the London Palladium and a record-setting 19-week run at New York’s Palace Theatre, earning her a special Tony Award. Her 1961 live album, *Judy at Carnegie Hall*, captured this peak performance and won two Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

Garland’s later career featured acclaimed film roles in *A Star Is Born* (1954) and *Judgment at Nuremberg* (1961), television specials, and her own show, *The Judy Garland Show* (1963-64), which received an Emmy nomination. Touring worldwide with her daughters Liza Minnelli and Lorna Luft, Garland left an indelible mark on American entertainment. Celebrated for her unparalleled vocal talent and emotional depth, Judy Garland remains a timeless figure whose influence continues to resonate across music and film history.
