About Vic Chesnutt

Vic Chesnutt was a uniquely gifted American singer-songwriter from Athens, Georgia, whose deeply personal acoustic folk-rock songs resonated with a devoted audience. At 18, a tragic car accident left him paralyzed, a challenge he transformed into poignant, introspective music that explored life’s complexities with unflinching honesty. His early performances at Athens’ iconic 40 Watt Club captured the attention of Michael Stipe of R.E.M., who played a crucial role in Chesnutt’s career by producing his first two albums, "Little" (1990) and "West of Rome" (1991). These releases laid the foundation for his presence in the indie and alternative folk scenes.

Chesnutt’s national profile soared with the 1996 tribute album "Sweet Relief Two: Gravity of the Situation," featuring major artists like Madonna, Smashing Pumpkins, and Hootie & the Blowfish covering his songs. This exposure led to a Capitol Records contract and his major-label debut, "About to Choke" (1996). Throughout his career, Chesnutt collaborated with notable musicians and bands including Lambchop on "The Salesman and Bernadette" (1998), jazz guitarist Bill Frisell on "Ghetto Bells" (2005), and the Athens band Elf Power on "Dark Developments" (2008). He also contributed to the project Brute with members of Widespread Panic.

Chesnutt continued to release critically acclaimed albums such as "Silver Lake" (2003) on New West Records and "North Star Deserter" (2007) via Constellation Records, blending alternative country, folk, and rock into evocative storytelling. Until his untimely death in 2009, Vic Chesnutt remained an influential figure, celebrated for his fearless lyricism and unique voice in American music history.
