About Black Coffee

Black Coffee, born Nkosinathi Maphumulo on March 11, 1976, in Durban, South Africa, has risen to international acclaim as one of Africa's most influential house music DJs and producers. Raised amid the sounds of his uncle’s reggae collection, Black Coffee’s early life was marked by hardship, including relocating to the impoverished township of Mthatha after his parents’ divorce and suffering a life-changing injury at age 14 during a politically charged taxi attack on the day Nelson Mandela was released from prison. Despite losing the use of his left arm, his passion for music only intensified.

He pursued jazz theory studies at Natal Technikon, which laid the foundation for his unique fusion of deep house with jazz, R&B, and distinctive African rhythms. Before fully embracing electronic music, he also formed the soul-pop trio Shana with friends. Black Coffee’s breakthrough came with his self-titled debut album (2005), recorded in his bedroom and released on his own Soulistic label. This album introduced his signature sound, which evolved through critically acclaimed projects like "Home Brewed" (2009), the expansive triple-disc "Africa Rising" (2012), and "Pieces of Me" (2015).

His career gained further momentum after attending the Red Bull Music Academy in 2003, leading to international distribution through Universal Music. Black Coffee set a Guinness World Record in 2010 with a marathon 60-hour DJ set and received recognition as Breakthrough DJ of the Year in 2015. Winning Best African Act at the 2016 BET Awards cemented his status as a global house music pioneer. Collaborations with artists such as Drake, David Guetta, Usher, and Celeste have propelled hits like "Drive" (2018), showcasing Black Coffee’s enduring ability to blend soulful African grooves with mainstream appeal.
