About Janet Kay

Janet Kay, born Janet Kay Bogle on January 17, 1958, in London, England, is celebrated as a groundbreaking voice in the lovers rock reggae genre. Growing up in Wembley and attending Brondesbury High School, she initially focused on secretarial skills before embarking on her music career in 1977. Her entry into the reggae scene was sparked by a chance meeting with members of Aswad, who introduced her to the legendary Alton Ellis. This connection led to her debut single, "Loving You," which quickly topped the reggae charts, showcasing her soulful vocal style perfectly suited to the genre’s smooth rhythms.

Janet Kay’s early catalog also includes notable tracks like "That's What Friends Are For" and "I Do Love You." However, her defining moment arrived with the 1979 release of "Silly Games," produced by Dennis Bovell for the Arawak label. The single became a major crossover success, climbing to number two on the UK charts and solidifying her position as the original lovers rock singer. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Janet maintained a steady, if understated, presence in the music world, continuing to release lovers rock material that stayed true to her roots.

Beyond her music career, Janet Kay exhibited versatility by branching into acting, appearing in several television roles with the Black Theatre Co-operative. Her soulful voice, enduring talent, and authentic connection with reggae audiences have made Janet Kay an iconic figure whose influence resonates across generations in lovers rock and reggae music.
