About Earth

Earth, formed in 1989 in Olympia, Washington, is a groundbreaking American band that pioneered the drone and ambient metal genres. Led by Dylan Carlson, the band's sole constant member through its decades-long evolution, Earth crafted a unique sonic identity marked by slow, hypnotic guitar drones deeply influenced by Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. Their seminal debut, "Earth 2" (1993), released amid the Pacific Northwest's grunge explosion, established the band’s signature detuned riffs and expansive soundscapes, influencing a generation of experimental and doom metal artists like Sunn O))) and Boris.

Early Earth lineups included figures such as Slim Moon, who later founded the Kill Rock Stars label, alongside collaborators like Joe Preston and Greg Babior. After a prolific early period featuring releases like "Extra-Capsular Extraction" (1991) and "Phase 3" (1995), the band went on hiatus following 1996’s "Pentastar: In the Style of Demons," largely due to Carlson’s battle with addiction. Upon achieving sobriety, Carlson resurrected Earth in 2003, partnering with drummer Adrienne Davies to explore new directions.

This marked a creative shift showcased in "Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method" (2005), blending psychedelic rock, Gothic Americana, and spaghetti western motifs. Subsequent albums like "The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull" (2009), the "Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light" series (2011–2012), and "Primitive and Deadly" (2014)—featuring vocal contributions from Mark Lanegan and Rabia Shaheen Qazi—highlighted Earth’s evolving sound. Their 2017 collaborative EP with electronic artist Kevin Martin, "Concrete Desert," further expanded their experimental palette. Later works, including "Full Upon Her Burning Lips" (2019), introduced a rawer, percussive dimension while retaining their hallmark cinematic depth. Earth remains a seminal force in heavy drone music, continuously pushing the boundaries of metal and experimental rock.
