About Over the Rhine

Over the Rhine is a Cincinnati-based band formed in 1989 by the married duo Karin Bergquist (vocals, guitar) and Linford Detweiler (bass, piano), who met as music students at Malone College in Canton, Ohio. Initially joined by guitarist Ric Hordinski and drummer Brian Kelley—both former members of the Christian rock band Servant—the group took its name from Cincinnati’s historic German working-class neighborhood. Over the Rhine quickly built a devoted following with their literate, folk-tinged art-pop sound, deeply influenced by literary greats like Dylan Thomas, C.S. Lewis, and T.S. Eliot.

Their early independent albums, including *Till We Have Faces* (1991) and *Patience* (1992), attracted attention from I.R.S. Records, with *Patience* notably reissued featuring its original indie artwork—an unusual distinction. After releasing *Eve* (1994) under I.R.S., the band parted ways with the label in 1996 to reclaim creative freedom, leading to intimate releases such as *Good Dog Bad Dog* (1996) and *The Darkest Night of the Year* (1996). Over the Rhine’s 2003 double album *Ohio* paid homage to their Midwestern roots, solidifying their reputation for emotionally resonant songwriting.

Collaborations with acclaimed producer Joe Henry on *Long Surrender* (2011) and *Meet Me at the Edge of the World* (2013) expanded their sonic palette, featuring poignant guest vocals from artists like Lucinda Williams and Aimee Mann. Their 2019 album *Love & Revelation*, produced in Culver City, exemplifies the band’s continued artistic growth. Over the Rhine’s enduring blend of poetic lyricism and rich musical textures has secured their place as masters of intelligent, heartfelt music that defies easy categorization.
