About Front 242

Front 242, formed in Brussels in October 1981 by Patrick Codenys and Dirk Bergen, quickly emerged as a pioneering force in the European electronic body music (EBM) scene. The duo expanded into a quartet by 1982 with the addition of programmer Daniel Bressanutti and vocalist Jean-Luc de Meyer. The band’s name was chosen for its universal meaning and unifying associations, reflecting their innovative approach to music. Front 242’s debut album, *Geography* (1982), laid the groundwork for their signature blend of aggressive, synth-driven sound within the burgeoning industrial scene. This evolution became more pronounced with the *No Comment* EP (1984), highlighting harder rhythms and de Meyer's compelling, menacing vocals.

Their breakthrough came through a partnership with Chicago’s Wax Trax! Records, which reissued earlier work and released *Official Version* (1987). This album featured club hits like "Masterhit" and "Quite Unusual," gaining the band significant underground traction. Front 242 reached new creative heights with *Front by Front* (1988), delivering tightly structured songs and anthems such as "Headhunter" and "Never Stop." This success positioned them alongside industrial heavyweights like Ministry and Skinny Puppy.

By the early 1990s, Front 242 signed with Epic Records, marking Wax Trax!'s first major-label crossover. The single "Tragedy (For You)" and the album *Tyranny (For You)* (1991) expanded their mainstream visibility, with MTV rotation elevating their profile. Despite lineup changes—most notably Richard 23’s departure in 1993 and Jean-Luc de Meyer’s exit in 1995—the band persisted. They released influential works like *06:21:03:11 Up Evil*, *05:22:09:12 Off* (1993), and the dynamic studio album *Pulse* (2003), available on both CD and DVD.

Throughout their enduring career, Front 242 has remained an essential figure in electronic and industrial music, continually shaping EBM with their dynamic sound, innovative production, and lasting influence.
