About The Police

The Police, formed in London in 1977 by drummer Stewart Copeland and bassist-vocalist Sting (born Gordon Sumner), quickly rose to prominence as one of rock’s most innovative and successful bands. Initially joined by guitarist Henri Padovani, the lineup soon solidified with the addition of Andy Summers, whose intricate, jazz-influenced guitar work became a hallmark of their sound. Blending punk energy with reggae rhythms and sophisticated pop craftsmanship, The Police stood out for their mastery of polyrhythmic arrangements and Sting’s distinctive vocal melodies.

Their breakthrough arrived with the debut album "Outlandos d’Amour" (1978), featuring the now-classic hit "Roxanne." Subsequent albums "Reggatta de Blanc" (1979) and "Zenyatta Mondatta" (1980) cemented their international success, with chart-toppers like "Message in a Bottle" and "Don’t Stand So Close to Me." The band reached its commercial pinnacle with 1983’s "Synchronicity," propelled by the haunting and enduring ballad "Every Breath You Take," which topped charts across the US and UK.

Despite their global acclaim and multiple Grammy and Brit Awards, creative differences led to the band’s split in 1984. Sting embarked on a celebrated solo career, while Copeland and Summers pursued various artistic projects. The Police reunited briefly for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2003 and staged a widely successful world tour in 2007, but have not released new music since. Their legacy lives on as pioneers who expanded punk’s boundaries, fusing diverse genres into a timeless rock sound.
