About Future Islands

Future Islands is a Baltimore-based synth-pop trio known for their guitar-free sound and the powerful, emotive vocals of frontman Samuel T. Herring. The band’s origins trace back to 2003 at East Carolina University, where Herring, William Cashion, and Gerrit Welmers first joined forces as Art Lord & the Self-Portraits. They rebranded as Future Islands in 2006 and eventually moved to Baltimore, honing their distinct minimalist electronic style through extensive touring and early releases like their debut album "Wave Like Home" (2008).

Over the next several years, Future Islands continued refining their sound with notable albums such as "In Evening Air" (2010) and "On the Water" (2011) on Thrill Jockey. Their breakthrough came in 2014 after signing with 4AD and releasing the critically acclaimed "Singles," produced by Chris Coady. This record, featuring the unforgettable single "Seasons (Waiting on You)," catapulted them into indie-rock prominence, especially following a memorable performance on Late Night with David Letterman that showcased Herring’s intense stage presence.

Future Islands maintained their momentum with "The Far Field" (2017), produced by John Congleton and featuring a collaboration with Debbie Harry, and the moodier, co-produced "As Long as You Are" (2020). Their seventh album, "People Who Aren’t There Anymore" (2024), balances spirited rhythms with introspective ballads, reaffirming their status as pioneers of modern synth-pop. Outside the band, Herring explores hip-hop as Hemlock Ernst and collaborates with artists like Madlib and BadBadNotGood, adding further layers to Future Islands’ evolving soundscape.
