About Destroyer

Destroyer is the longtime musical project of Vancouver-based Canadian singer-songwriter Dan Bejar, launched in 1995. Originating with an electric folk sound on the debut album "We'll Build Them a Golden Bridge" (1996), Destroyer quickly established itself through Bejar’s distinctive vocal style, often likened to David Bowie, and cryptic, theatrical lyricism. Over the late 1990s and early 2000s, the music evolved from sparse acoustic arrangements to richer band-driven compositions with albums like "City of Daughters" (1998) and "Thief" (2000), solidifying Bejar’s reputation for complex songwriting and compelling melodies.

Destroyer’s breakthrough came with the critically acclaimed and commercially successful "Kaputt" (2011), which introduced smooth jazz influences and ambient electronics, marking the project’s first appearance on the Billboard 200. Subsequent releases, including "Poison Season" (2015), "Have We Met" (2020), and the experimental "Labyrinthitis" (2022), showcase Bejar’s continual experimentation with lush instrumentation, lounge pop, spoken word, and dissonant textures, reflecting a fearless approach to genre blending.

Alongside Destroyer, Dan Bejar is known for his significant collaborations with indie rock collectives such as the New Pornographers and Swan Lake, contributing to defining albums like "Mass Romantic" (2000) and "Brill Bruisers" (2014). Through nearly three decades, Destroyer remains a singular force in alternative music—celebrated for its evolving soundscapes, enigmatic lyrics, and Bejar’s unmistakable artistic vision.
