About Yo La Tengo

Formed in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1984, Yo La Tengo has become a cornerstone of the indie rock landscape, celebrated for their fearless fusion of noise rock, dream pop, and experimental sounds. The band is anchored by the husband-and-wife duo Ira Kaplan (guitar, vocals) and Georgia Hubley (drums, vocals), with bassist James McNew joining in 1992 to complete the classic trio lineup. Their name, derived from a Spanish baseball phrase meaning "I've got it," reflects the group’s playful yet skillful approach to music.

Yo La Tengo first drew attention with their debut album "Ride the Tiger" (1986), showcasing clear influences from the Velvet Underground—a reverence that would continue through their career, including their portrayal of the band in the 1996 film "I Shot Andy Warhol." Over the years, they have effortlessly balanced intense, feedback-heavy noise rock with delicately melodic pop, as heard on landmark albums such as "Painful" (1993), "Electr-O-Pura" (1995), and "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" (1997). Their versatility extends to inventive covers and acoustic explorations on albums like "Fakebook" (1990) and "Stuff Like That There" (2015).

Known for their thoughtful, scholarly approach and collaborative spirit, Yo La Tengo has worked with producer John McEntire on "Fade" (2013) following a long partnership with Roger Moutenot. Beyond studio work, they have supported artists like Ray Davies on tour and crafted soundtracks for French filmmaker Jean Painlevé’s documentaries. Their beloved annual Hanukkahpalooza festival in Hoboken underscores their dedication to community and creative experimentation, securing their legacy as indie music icons continuously pushing artistic boundaries across nearly four decades.
