About The Orb

The Orb is a groundbreaking British electronic music collective formed in 1988, widely credited with pioneering the ambient house genre. Founded and led by Dr. Alex Paterson—who previously worked as a roadie for Killing Joke and DJed at Paul Oakenfold’s Heaven club—the group fused slowed-down Chicago house rhythms with the ethereal influences of ambient icons like Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream. This innovative blend, enriched with eclectic samples ranging from NASA broadcasts to nature sounds and obscure vocal loops, crafted immersive, atmospheric soundscapes that defined a new era in electronic music.

The Orb’s breakthrough arrived with the critically acclaimed double album "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld" (1991), which brought ambient house into wider public consciousness. Their commercial peak followed in 1992 with "U.F.Orb," which topped the UK album charts. This release featured “Blue Room,” a nearly 40-minute single that became the longest track ever to reach the UK Top Ten and secured a memorable *Top of the Pops* appearance.

Over the years, The Orb’s lineup evolved to include key collaborators such as Kris Weston and Thomas Fehlmann. Their sound journeyed through experimental works like "Pomme Fritz" (1994), the earthier "Orbus Terrarum" (1995), and the expansive "Orblivion" (1997). Transitioning from Big Life and Island Records to the German techno label Kompakt, they continued to innovate with albums like "Okie Dokie It’s the Orb on Kompakt" (2005). Notable collaborations include projects with Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour on "Metallic Spheres" (2010) and dub legend Lee "Scratch" Perry on "The Observer in the Star House" (2012).

Now celebrated for over three decades of groundbreaking work, The Orb remains influential with recent releases like "Moonbuilding 2703 AD" (2015) and "No Sounds Are Out of Bounds" (2018), blending rich vocal contributions and genre-defying ambitions. Their legacy stands as a testament to merging dancefloor energy with immersive, ambient experiences that continue to inspire electronica and chillout artists worldwide.
