About Shihad

Formed in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1988, Shihad built their reputation as one of the country’s most enduring rock bands. Originating from a high school project called Exit, founding members Jon Toogood (guitar/vocals) and Tom Larkin (drums) soon enlisted guitarist Phil Knight and bassist Karl Kippenberger, laying the foundation for their signature sound. Known for their explosive energy—famously blowing out a club PA system during a spirited cover of the Sex Pistols’ "Anarchy in the U.K."—Shihad initially blended speed metal with industrial influences, as showcased on their 1991 debut EP *Devolve* and the 1993 album *Churn*, which included the hit single "I Only Said."

Throughout the 1990s, Shihad’s blend of heavy metal, alternative, and industrial rock propelled albums like *Killjoy* (1995) and the critically acclaimed *The General Electric* (1999) to double platinum status in New Zealand. Following the global tensions after 9/11, they briefly rebranded as Pacifier, releasing a self-titled album in 2002 featuring collaborations with Scott Weiland and DJ Lethal. Reclaiming their original name in 2005, Shihad continued to evolve with albums such as *Love Is the New Hate* (2005), the electronica-infused *Beautiful Machine* (2008), hard-hitting *Ignite* (2010), and *FVEY* (2014), which became their fifth album to top New Zealand charts.

With a career spanning over three decades, Shihad’s powerful fusion of genres, relentless touring, and notable collaborations have cemented their status as icons of New Zealand rock. Their enduring impact remains evident in multiple chart-topping releases and a loyal fan base that spans generations.
