About Japanese Breakfast

Japanese Breakfast, the indie rock project led by singer-songwriter Michelle Zauner, has emerged as a powerful and distinctive voice since its formation in 2013. Originating from humble beginnings—recording music in warehouses, trailers, and lofts—Japanese Breakfast steadily gained critical acclaim for its emotionally rich songwriting and atmospheric soundscapes. The band’s evolution culminated in their fourth studio album, "For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)" (2024), which marked a significant milestone as their first true studio recording. This album was produced by Grammy-winning producer Blake Mills, noted for his work with legends like Bob Dylan and Fiona Apple, and was recorded at the iconic Sound City studio in Los Angeles, a site famed for classic albums by Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, and Neil Young.

With "For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)," Japanese Breakfast explores darker, more introspective emotional terrain, diverging from the vibrant and upbeat tones of the previous album, "Jubilee" (2021). Zauner’s songwriting here draws on themes of melancholy and poetic contemplation, blending indie rock with dream pop to craft a mature, atmospheric sound that resonates deeply within the indie music landscape.
