About George Gershwin

George Gershwin, born Jacob Gershvin on September 26, 1898, in Brooklyn to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, emerged as a transformative figure in American music, brilliantly merging classical concert traditions with popular entertainment. Initially drawn to piano studies under Charles Hambitzer, who introduced him to European classical music, Gershwin also absorbed the vibrant ragtime and stride piano styles permeating early 20th-century America. Leaving school in 1914, he began working in music publishing, where his talent quickly flourished.

Gershwin’s breakthrough came with the 1920 hit "Swanee," popularized by Al Jolson, which established him as a prominent songwriter. Collaborating closely with his lyricist brother Ira Gershwin, George delivered enduring Broadway successes, including "Fascinating Rhythm" from Lady, Be Good (1924) and the rhythmically innovative "I Got Rhythm" from Girl Crazy (1930). Beyond the stage, his groundbreaking concert works—such as Rhapsody in Blue (1924), Piano Concerto in F (1925), and An American in Paris (1928)—captured audiences by blending classical forms with jazz influences.

His magnum opus, the "folk opera" Porgy and Bess (1935), set in Charleston’s African American community, features the iconic lullaby "Summertime," a song celebrated across genres worldwide. Gershwin’s music resonated deeply on both sides of the Atlantic, earning admiration from composers like Maurice Ravel and avant-garde figures such as Arnold Schoenberg. Tragically, his pioneering career was cut short when he died of a brain tumor in 1937. Despite his premature death, George Gershwin’s innovative fusion of styles continues to shape and inspire the musical landscape today.
