About Loma

Loma is an indie folk collective born from the serendipitous collaboration of singer Emily Cross, multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer Dan Duszynski, and Jonathan Meiburg, frontman of the band Shearwater. Their creative chemistry first captured attention during a striking live performance at Sub Pop’s SPF 30 festival, where Cross famously dove into the crowd and sea mid-set, marking a memorable emotional high point. After this initial breakthrough, the members briefly parted ways—Cross immersed herself in solo music and visual art in rural Mexico, while Meiburg returned his focus to Shearwater. Eventually, the trio reunited at Duszynski’s Texas home, where they collaboratively crafted their debut album, "Don’t Shy Away" (2016).

Loma’s music is characterized by hauntingly beautiful soundscapes with themes centered on solitude, impermanence, and finding light within darkness. Their creative process thrives on democratic collaboration; all members frequently swap instruments and trust one another’s instincts. Meiburg likens this dynamic to using an ouija board, where the songs reveal themselves gradually through mutual intuition. The album’s rich textures are further enhanced by touring contributors Emily Lee (piano, violin), Matt Schuessler (bass), and Jenn Wasner of Flock of Dimes and Wye Oak.

With its gentle yet profound atmosphere, Loma’s music stands out as a luminous example of indie folk’s evolving landscape, blending emotional depth with an enchanting, ethereal quality that continues to resonate with listeners.
