About Common

Common, born Lonnie Rashied Lynn on Chicago’s South Side, has established himself as one of hip-hop’s most insightful and enduring artists. Originally performing under the name Common Sense, he gained early attention after winning The Source magazine’s Unsigned Hype contest, which led to his debut album *Can I Borrow a Dollar?* (1992). His follow-up album *Resurrection* (1994) cemented his underground reputation, especially with the landmark track “I Used to Love H.E.R.,” an allegorical critique of hip-hop’s commercial turn.

Following a legal dispute that prompted him to shorten his stage name to Common, he relocated from Chicago to Brooklyn, expanding his artistic collaborations. His 1997 album *One Day It'll All Make Sense* featured notable contributions from Lauryn Hill and Q-Tip, aligning him with a wave of conscious rap revival. Common’s mainstream breakthrough came with *Like Water for Chocolate* (2000), produced primarily by Questlove and showcasing collaborations with artists such as Macy Gray, Femi Kuti, and Mos Def. Tracks like “The Sixth Sense” and “The Light” garnered critical acclaim and Grammy recognition.

Common’s partnership with Kanye West peaked on *Be* (2005), an album that earned four Grammy nominations, followed by *Finding Forever* (2007), which continued their creative synergy. Beyond music, Common has successfully transitioned into acting, with roles in AMC’s *Hell on Wheels* and films like *Selma* (2014). His collaboration with John Legend on “Glory,” featured in *Selma*, won both an Academy Award and Grammy, solidifying his role as a multifaceted artist. His recent projects, including *Nobody Smiling* (2014) and *Black America Again* (2016), highlight his commitment to socially conscious themes, maintaining his reputation as a thoughtful voice in hip-hop and activism alike.
