About Yasmin Williams

Yasmin Williams is a pioneering acoustic fingerstyle guitarist celebrated for her inventive and contemporary approach to the instrument. Raised in northern Virginia in a musically rich environment that spanned genres from smooth jazz to hip-hop, Williams developed an eclectic style that blends alternate tunings, percussive strikes, and unique lap tapping techniques. Her musical journey sparked unexpectedly in 2009 after playing the video game Guitar Hero, which motivated her to convince her parents to buy her an electric guitar. Self-taught by ear, she soon expanded her expertise to bass, 12-string, and classical guitars before ultimately embracing the acoustic guitar, inspired by exceptional players within the fingerstyle community.

Williams’s distinctive sound breaks conventional acoustic boundaries, allowing her to craft textured, compelling compositions that have earned widespread acclaim. She gained early recognition by winning New York University’s Ultra Violet Live talent show, securing the top spot at Culpeper Has Talent, and becoming a finalist in Rolling Stone’s Young Gun guitar competition. Her sophomore album, "Urban Driftwood" (2021), solidified her standing as a vital voice in modern acoustic music, receiving praise from notable outlets such as Pitchfork, NPR, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and The Washington Post.
