About M83

M83 is the groundbreaking French electronic music project led by Anthony Gonzalez, whose innovative blend of synth-pop and shoegaze has profoundly shaped contemporary electronic music since the early 2000s. Hailing from Antibes, France, Gonzalez initially pursued a football career, inspired by his grandfather Laurent Robuschi, a 1966 FIFA World Cup player, before a serious injury at age 14 redirected his focus toward music. Formed in 2001 as a duo with Nicolas Fromageau, M83 debuted with a self-titled album that fused ambient instrumentals and electronic textures. Their follow-up, "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts" (2003), earned critical acclaim for its expansive soundscapes combining electronic and shoegaze elements. Following Fromageau’s departure, Gonzalez steered M83 into a solo endeavor that evolved with albums like "Before the Dawn Heals Us" (2005) and the ambient-driven "Digital Shades, Vol. 1" (2007).

M83’s commercial breakthrough came with the nostalgic, 1980s-inspired "Saturdays = Youth" (2008), topping Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. Relocating to Los Angeles, Gonzalez expanded his sonic ambitions with the double album "Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming" (2011), which featured the monumental hit "Midnight City," earned a Grammy nomination, and reached number 15 on the Billboard 200. Beyond albums, M83 has built a respected presence in film scoring, notably co-composing the soundtrack for the sci-fi film "Oblivion" (2013) and creating evocative scores for art and genre films like "Knife+Heart" (2019). The 2016 album "Junk" further showcased Gonzalez’s flair for eclectic, nostalgic sounds. With a signature fusion of cinematic grandeur and emotional depth, M83 continues to be a vital force in electronic music innovation.
