About Tom Waits

Tom Waits stands as one of the most original and influential voices in American music since the early 1970s. Born and raised in Southern California, Waits quickly caught the attention of manager Herb Cohen, who guided his early career. His debut album, "Closing Time" (1973), released on Asylum Records, featured the memorable track "Ol' 55," which would later gain further popularity through a cover by the Eagles. Throughout the 1970s, Waits crafted a distinctive sound, characterized by his raspy, gravelly voice and evocative storytelling that spotlighted society’s overlooked and down-and-out characters. Albums such as "The Heart of Saturday Night" (1974), the live double album "Nighthawks at the Diner" (1975), and "Heart Attack and Vine" (1980) solidified his growing cult following and critical acclaim.

As his artistry evolved, Waits embraced theatricality and unconventional instrumentation, especially after signing with Island Records. The transformative album "Swordfishtrombones" (1983) marked a bold departure from his earlier style, blending experimental sounds with cinematic sensibilities. This period also coincided with his expanding work in film, including appearances in Francis Ford Coppola’s movies and an Academy Award nomination for scoring "One from the Heart" (1982), where he met playwright and future wife Kathleen Brennan—his key creative partner.

The 1990s and beyond saw Waits winning a Grammy for "Bone Machine" (1992) and returning triumphantly with albums like "Mule Variations" (1999). His ongoing collaborations with avant-garde director Robert Wilson produced theatrical works such as "The Black Rider" and "Alice," further cementing his reputation as a visionary artist. Into the 2000s and 2010s, releases like "Alice" (2002), "Blood Money" (2002), "Real Gone" (2004), and "Bad as Me" (2011) showcased his continual reinvention. Tom Waits remains a cultural icon, whose gravelly vocals, vivid storytelling, and willingness to push artistic boundaries have left an indelible mark on both music and film.
