About The Roots

The Roots, formed in 1987 by rapper Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) and drummer ?uestlove (Ahmir Khalib Thompson) at the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, are heralded as one of hip-hop’s most innovative and enduring groups. Unlike typical rap ensembles, The Roots distinguish themselves through their signature live-band approach, combining live instrumentation with sharp lyrical delivery. Early members included bassist Hub (Leon Hubbard), rapper Malik B, human beatbox Rahzel, and keyboardist Kamal Gray, evolving from street performances into a full-fledged band.

Their debut album, "Organix" (1993), built their underground credibility, followed by the sample-free, eclectic "Do You Want More?!!!??!" (1995). The group gained mainstream success with the platinum-certified "Things Fall Apart" (1999), which featured the Grammy-winning single "You Got Me," featuring Erykah Badu. Albums like "Illadelph Halflife" (1996), "Phrenology" (2002), and the jam-session-inspired "The Tipping Point" (2004) highlighted their musical growth. Concept albums such as "Undun" (2011) and "...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin" (2014) showcase their willingness to push genre boundaries and challenge conventional hip-hop narratives.

Since 2009, The Roots have reached broader audiences as the house band for Jimmy Fallon's late-night shows, all while maintaining creative momentum with acclaimed projects like "How I Got Over" (2010) and the socially charged "Wake Up!" (2010) with John Legend. Collaborations with diverse artists, including Betty Wright and Elvis Costello on 2013’s genre-blurring "Wise Up Ghost," further cement their reputation as pioneers who seamlessly blend hip-hop, jazz, and soul into a dynamic, live performance ethos.
