About Diego el Cigala

Diego el Cigala, born Diego Ramón Jiménez Salazar, is one of the most acclaimed voices in contemporary flamenco and Latin music. Nicknamed "the Little Prawn" by flamenco legend José Monje Cruz (Camarón) for the passionate energy radiating from his petite frame, Diego began his career in Madrid’s flamenco clubs in El Rastro district. He initially gained recognition accompanying prominent flamenco dancers before establishing himself as a solo artist in 1994 alongside guitarist Antón Jiménez.

His international breakthrough arrived with the 2004 album "Lágrimas Negras," a groundbreaking collaboration with Cuban jazz pianist Bebo Valdés. This fusion of flamenco and Afro-Cuban jazz won widespread critical acclaim, expanding his global audience. In 2006, Diego secured the Latin Grammy Award for Best Flamenco Album with "Picasso en Mis Ojos," affirming his status as a flamenco innovator.

Displaying remarkable versatility, he explored Argentine tango with the live album "Cigala & Tango" (2010), recorded at Buenos Aires’ Gran Rex theater with bandoneonist Néstor Marconi and rock artist Andrés Calamaro. The album achieved gold status and earned another Latin Grammy, highlighting his fluid genre blending. His 2013 album "Romance de la Luna Tucumana" further fused Andalusian songs, tango, and rock, again winning accolades.

Following the tragic loss of his wife Amparo Fernández, Diego relocated to the Dominican Republic and embraced salsa with the 2016 album "Indestructible," collaborating with legendary Latin musicians like Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Oscar D’León. Throughout his career, Diego el Cigala has skillfully merged flamenco with jazz, bolero, tango, and salsa, solidifying his reputation as an internationally respected and dynamic artist in Latin music.
