About Earl Sweatshirt

Earl Sweatshirt, born Thebe Kgositsile in Chicago in 1994, is a trailblazing figure in alternative hip-hop known for his introspective lyrics and experimental soundscapes. Growing up in Los Angeles, he emerged as a founding member of the influential collective Odd Future after being discovered and invited by Tyler, The Creator in 2009. At just 16, Earl released his critically acclaimed debut mixtape, "Earl" (2010), a raw and dark project recorded shortly before his mother sent him to a boarding school in Samoa, pausing his budding career.

Returning to Los Angeles in 2012, Earl Sweatshirt quickly reestablished himself with key collaborations on Odd Future’s "The OF Tape, Vol. 2" (2012) and the Grammy-winning Frank Ocean album "Channel Orange" (2012). His major-label debut, "Doris" (2013), featured production from The Neptunes, RZA, and Frank Ocean, and climbed to number five on the Billboard 200. Known for his languid yet intricate rap style, Earl’s work became increasingly introspective and experimental with albums like "I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside" (2015) and "Some Rap Songs" (2018), the latter deeply influenced by his father’s passing—South African poet Keorapetse Kgositsile.

Continuing to push hip-hop boundaries, Earl released the concise "Sick!" (2022), collaborating with underground artists such as Armand Hammer, followed by "Voir Dire" (2023), a collaborative effort with producer The Alchemist that showcased a more grounded sound with features like MIKE. Earl Sweatshirt remains a compelling and innovative force, persistently redefining contemporary rap with his unique artistic voice.
