About Prodigy

Albert "Prodigy" Johnson, born in 1974 on Long Island and raised in Queens, New York, was a seminal figure in hardcore hip-hop, celebrated for his incisive lyricism and authentic storytelling. Coming from a musically gifted family—his mother was a member of The Crystals, while his grandfather Budd Johnson and grand-uncle Keg Johnson were renowned jazz musicians—Prodigy initially explored the saxophone before dedicating himself to rap. His first recorded appearance came in 1991 with uncredited vocals on Hi-Five’s "Too Young," featured on the *Boyz N the Hood* soundtrack.

During his high school years, Prodigy co-founded the legendary duo Mobb Deep with Havoc. Together, they crafted East Coast rap classics like *The Infamous* (1995) and *Hell on Earth* (1996), both earning RIAA gold certification and solidifying their place in ’90s hip-hop history. After the commercial success of *Murda Muzik* (1999), Prodigy launched a solo career marked by the acclaimed *H.N.I.C.* series—beginning in 2000 and continuing with sequels in 2008 and 2012. He also teamed up with producer The Alchemist on *Return of the Mac* (2007), showcasing his versatility beyond the duo.

Beyond music, Prodigy was an author, penning his autobiography *My Infamous Life* and the prison-inspired cookbook *Commissary Kitchen*. Despite battling sickle cell anemia throughout his life, he remained a powerful voice until his untimely death in 2017 due to complications from the disease. Prodigy's enduring influence continues to resonate as one of hip-hop’s most respected and authentic storytellers.
