About Jorge Aragão

Jorge Aragão is a legendary Brazilian sambista whose career has spanned over four decades, firmly establishing him as one of the most influential figures in contemporary samba. Born and raised in the vibrant Rio de Janeiro suburb of Ramos, Aragão emerged in the 1970s as part of the groundbreaking "generation born at the shadow of the Ramos tamarind," a creative movement that revitalized traditional samba de mesa and partido alto styles. Early on, he honed his craft performing in Rio’s intimate bars and nightclubs, inspired and mentored by samba icons like Martinho da Vila and Beth Carvalho.

Aragão gained national acclaim in 1977 when Elza Soares recorded his song "Malandro," co-written with Jotabê a decade earlier. As a founding member of Grupo Fundo de Quintal, which evolved from the Cacique de Ramos carnival bloco, he played a pivotal role in shaping modern samba. His solo debut, "Jorge Aragão" (1982), was followed by noteworthy albums such as "Verão" (1983), "Coisa de Pele," and "Raiz e Flor." His live album "Jorge Aragão Ao Vivo" achieved double platinum status, selling over a million copies—a testament to his enduring popularity.

With timeless hits like "Malandro" and "Coisinha Do Pai"—the latter famously covered by Beth Carvalho—Jorge Aragão's compositions have been embraced by samba legends including Ney Matogrosso, Alcione, and Zeca Pagodinho. Beyond Brazil, he has taken samba to international audiences, touring extensively across the U.S. and performing in cities like New York, Miami, and Washington, D.C., thus cementing his legacy as a global ambassador of Afro-Brazilian music.
