About COALTAR OF THE DEEPERS

Coaltar of the Deepers is a pioneering Japanese band, formed in Tokyo in 1991, known for its innovative fusion of shoegaze, techno, heavy metal, and traditional Eastern music. The original lineup included Watanabe (vocals), Kanno (drums), Yoshio (bass), and Narasaki (guitar). Following Watanabe’s departure in 1992, Narasaki stepped up as lead vocalist, shaping the band’s signature sound heavily influenced by My Bloody Valentine, yet enriched with diverse genre elements.

Their debut EP, "White" (1991), set the stage for a rapidly growing fanbase, followed by early releases like "Queen’s Park All You Change" and "Sinking Slowly" (both 1992). The band’s full-length debut, "The Visitors from Deepspace" (1994), marked a milestone with a compelling cover of The Cure’s "Killing an Arab," released under Victor Records. Throughout the 2000s, Coaltar of the Deepers evolved their sound, venturing into electronic experimentation on albums such as "Come Over to the Deepend" (2000) and "No Thank You" (2001), while incorporating traditional Eastern motifs in works like "Newave."

Narasaki’s prolific side projects—including Sadesper Record, which contributed to anime soundtracks such as "Boogiepop Phantom" and "Paradise Kiss"—have enriched the band’s creativity, even as Coaltar of the Deepers’ lineup shifted. By 2007, the group slimmed down to a duo after Yoshio left but continued to push boundaries within Japan’s alternative rock scene. With acclaimed tours, including stops in the U.S., and a role in fostering artists like Astrobrite, Coaltar of the Deepers remains an influential force, celebrated for their genre-defying sound and enduring innovation.
