About Maxim Vengerov

Maxim Vengerov, born on August 20, 1974, in Novosibirsk, Siberia, is widely regarded as one of the leading violinists of his generation and a prominent figure in the Russian virtuoso tradition. Growing up in a musical family—his father an oboist and his mother a choir director—Vengerov began violin studies at age four, quickly displaying extraordinary talent and dedication. Recognizing his potential, Soviet authorities relocated him to Moscow at seven, where he trained under the acclaimed pedagogue Zakhar Bron. This mentorship paved the way for early triumphs, including winning the Junior Wieniawski Competition in 1984.

Vengerov’s prodigious gifts propelled him to international acclaim during his teenage years, with performances alongside top ensembles such as the Concertgebouw Orchestra and a U.S. debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1991. His recording career flourished in the 1990s, notably with the 1994 album featuring Shostakovich and Prokofiev violin concertos conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich—an award-winning release that earned multiple Gramophone Awards and Grammy nominations. Demonstrating remarkable versatility, Vengerov also explores Baroque repertoire alongside jazz and rock influences, setting him apart from many of his contemporaries.

A shoulder injury in 2005 led Vengerov to deepen his focus on conducting, culminating in his appointment as chief conductor of the Menuhin Festival Gstaad Orchestra in 2010. He also imparts his expertise as an educator at the Menuhin Institute and the Royal College of Music. Now residing in Monaco as an Israeli citizen, Maxim Vengerov continues to inspire audiences worldwide, performing on the historic “ex-Kreutzer” Stradivarius and using a bow once owned by the legendary Jascha Heifetz. His enduring artistry cements his position as a defining figure in classical music’s modern landscape.
