About The Notorious B.I.G.

The Notorious B.I.G., born Christopher Wallace on May 21, 1972, in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, rose from a street hustler to an iconic figure in East Coast hip-hop. After dropping out of high school, Wallace’s demo tapes caught the ear of Sean "Puffy" Combs, who signed him to Bad Boy Records following his exit from Uptown Records. Adopting the stage names Biggie Smalls and The Notorious B.I.G., he quickly gained attention for his vivid storytelling, blending raw realism with humor and insight into urban life.

His 1994 debut album, "Ready to Die," revitalized East Coast rap during an era dominated by West Coast artists. The album featured platinum hits such as "Juicy," "Big Poppa," and "One More Chance," the latter tying a chart debut record previously shared by Michael Jackson. Wallace’s rise coincided with growing East-West coast tensions, especially after Tupac Shakur publicly accused him in connection with a 1994 shooting. Despite personal struggles, including legal issues and a car accident that temporarily left him wheelchair-bound, Biggie continued to shape hip-hop through collaborations with artists like Michael Jackson and R. Kelly and by mentoring acts such as Junior M.A.F.I.A.

Tragically, The Notorious B.I.G. was murdered in a Los Angeles drive-by shooting on March 9, 1997, just six months after Tupac’s death. His posthumous double album, "Life After Death" (1997), debuted at number one and spawned hits like "Hypnotize" and "Mo Money Mo Problems." Certified ten times platinum, the record cemented his legacy as one of hip-hop’s greatest storytellers. Even decades after his death, Biggie’s influence endures, embodying both the artistry and turmoil of his era in hip-hop culture.
