About John Matthias

John Matthias, born in England, first made his mark as an accomplished session violinist in the mid-1990s, lending his distinctive sound to landmark albums such as Radiohead’s critically acclaimed "The Bends," the Wishplants’ "Coma," Matthew Herbert’s "Bodily Functions," and Lunatic Calm’s "Breaking Point." Inspired early on by iconic bands like the Beatles and the Smiths, Matthias initially cut his teeth playing with lesser-known groups including Jackdaw Music. His rising prominence as a sought-after collaborator showcased a virtuosity on the violin that became his signature.

In 1998, Matthias relocated to Bristol, Avon, a move that profoundly influenced his creative direction. Immersed in the city’s laid-back atmosphere, he gradually transitioned from session work to crafting his own music. This evolution culminated in his debut solo album, "Smalltown, Shining" (2001), where Matthias stepped away from his violin and embraced vocals, guitar, and production. The album's introspective pop-folk style, rich with gentle melodies and reflective lyrics, earned critical praise reminiscent of Neil Young’s quieter moments.

John Matthias’ journey from a respected session musician to a thoughtful solo artist highlights his versatility and deep musicality, securing his place in the broader landscape of English singer-songwriters.
