About AKB48

AKB48, one of Japan’s most influential all-female idol groups, was created in 2005 by famed producer Akimoto Yasushi. Named after Tokyo’s vibrant Akihabara district, where they perform daily in their dedicated theater, the group originally formed with Team A, selected from over 8,000 auditionees. Shortly after, Team K and Team B were added, completing the pioneering trio. The number “48” in their name initially reflected their large membership, which has since fluctuated with ongoing auditions and graduations.

AKB48 made their debut with the single "Sakura No Hanabiratachi" (2006), achieving moderate indie success before signing with DefSTAR Records, a Sony Music subsidiary. Their breakthrough hit, "Aitakatta" (2006), propelled them into the national spotlight. The group’s knack for stirring conversation was evident with the controversial 2007 release "Seifuku Ga Jama Wo Suru," which sparked debate over its provocative themes while climbing the charts.

Known for their prolific output, AKB48 released multiple albums and stage DVDs in 2007 and gained mainstream recognition with appearances on prestigious programs such as Kohaku Uta Gassen. Hits like "Oogoe Diamond" (2009) and "Namida Surprise!" (2009)—the latter earning their first gold certification—cemented their commercial success. Their innovative theater concept, combined with large-scale concerts at iconic venues like Budokan, alongside sister groups such as SKE48, helped solidify AKB48’s enduring legacy in Japanese pop culture and music history.
