About The Knife

The Knife, the Swedish electronic duo formed by siblings Karin and Olof Dreijer in 1999, emerged from a barn on Sweden’s west coast to become one of the most influential forces in experimental pop and electronic music. Originating from Gothenburg, they introduced their distinctive sound with the self-titled debut album *The Knife* (2001), blending synth-driven rhythms with pitch-shifted, gender-defying vocals and sharp, queer-themed lyrics. Their breakthrough came with *Deep Cuts* (2003), which featured the iconic single "Heartbeats"—a track that gained widespread recognition internationally, especially after being covered by José González.

Known for their enigmatic public image, The Knife frequently performed masked and famously boycotted the 2003 Swedish Grammis by sending feminist activists to accept their award, spotlighting gender inequality in the industry. Their artistic vision deepened with *Silent Shout* (2006), a darker, critically acclaimed album that topped Swedish charts and expanded their global influence. The duo pushed boundaries further with the ambitious, opera-inspired *Tomorrow, in a Year* (2010), followed by *Shaking the Habitual* (2013), an album charged with political themes surrounding gender, economics, and the environment, supported by innovative live shows.

After disbanding in 2014, both Karin and Olof pursued solo ventures—Karin as Fever Ray, and Olof under the name Oni Ayhun—yet The Knife’s legacy continues to inspire a generation of electronic and pop musicians worldwide.
