About Melvins

Formed in 1983 in the small town of Montesano (often associated with nearby Aberdeen), Washington, Melvins are widely regarded as pioneers of sludge metal and key architects of the grunge sound. Guitarist and vocalist Buzz Osborne, along with drummer Dale Crover, forged a unique blend of punk’s raw intensity and Black Sabbath's crushing heaviness. This monolithic style, characterized by slow, drop-D riffs, became foundational for Seattle legends like Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, and Tad. Notably, Kurt Cobain’s vocal support helped Melvins secure a deal with Atlantic Records in the early 1990s, elevating their profile within the alternative rock scene.

Melvins’ debut EP “6 Songs” (1986) first showcased their innovative sound, which matured by the time of the heavy, definitive album “Bullhead” (1991). Over four decades, the band has remained prolific and experimental, releasing landmark albums such as “Lysol” (1992), “Stag” (1996), and the ambitious double album and film score “A Walk with Love and Death” (2017). Their constant exploration includes lineup experimentation, featuring multiple drummers on “A Senile Animal” (2006), rotating bassists on “Basses Loaded” (2016), and dual bass players on “Pinkus Abortion Technician” (2018).

Though Melvins have maintained a cult following rather than mainstream commercial success, their influence reverberates through the evolution of alternative and heavy music. Osborne’s collaborations, including work with projects like Fantômas, further cement their legacy as innovators bridging punk, metal, and experimental rock with relentless creativity.
