About Brett Naucke

Brett Naucke is a distinguished experimental musician known for his immersive, abstract soundscapes built primarily around modular synthesizers. Rooted firmly in Chicago’s vibrant underground scene, Naucke’s work draws inspiration from lucid dreaming, creating a sonic palette that ranges from minimal drones to richly layered, chaotic textures interspersed with hypnotic, pulsating rhythms. After moving to Chicago in the 2000s to complete his college education, he founded the influential Catholic Tapes label in 2007, an imprint central to the cassette culture of the city until 2015. Under the alias Face Worker, Naucke released several cassettes, collaborating with artists like Ben Billington, Michael Pollard, and Wyatt Howland.

Beginning in 2010, he shifted to releasing material under his own name, with early works appearing on labels such as Arbor and Field Studies. His haunting debut album, "The Visitor" (2013), marked the start of a steady output that includes the "Transparency" EP (2014) and the critically acclaimed "Seed" (2014) on Spectrum Spools—remarkable for its innovative use of a single synth patch yielding diverse sonic landscapes. Subsequent albums such as "Executable Dreamtime" (2016) on Umor Rex and "Multiple Hallucinations" (2017) on Hausu Mountain further explored his experimental approach. "The Mansion" (2018) featured collaborations with Natalie Chami and Whitney Johnson, solidifying his reputation for inventive modular synthesis.

Naucke continued pushing boundaries with the "Electronic Hypnosis Program" EP (2019) on Make Noise Records and "EMS Hallucinations" (2020), an album born from a residency at Stockholm’s Elektronmusikstudion, where he utilized Buchla 200 and Serge modular synths. He has also toured with post-rock innovators Tortoise and performed with the cult experimental collective ONO, cementing his role as a key figure in contemporary avant-garde electronic music.
