About Obituary

Obituary, a seminal death metal band from Tampa, Florida, first formed in 1984 under the name Xecutioner before adopting their iconic moniker in 1989. Emerging from the vibrant mid-1980s Florida metal scene, Obituary pioneered a distinct sound that blended blistering speed with slow, crushing riffs. Their groundbreaking debut, "Slowly We Rot" (1989), set the blueprint for death metal by fusing jagged, downtuned guitars with John Tardy’s signature snarling vocals and dynamic tempo shifts, distinguishing them from contemporaries like Death and Possessed.

Throughout the early 1990s, albums such as "Cause of Death" (1990) and "The End Complete" (1992) solidified Obituary’s reputation as architects of the genre, influencing fellow Tampa legends including Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse. After a mid-90s hiatus, they reunited in 2003, returning with "Frozen in Time" (2005). Despite lineup changes—most notably the departure of longtime guitarist Allen West and the tragic loss of bassist Frank Watkins in 2015—the band continued evolving their sound. Their crowdfunded release, "Inked in Blood" (2014), marked their first U.S. chart entry, while the critically acclaimed self-titled album "Obituary" (2017) showcased renewed energy and creativity.

Over four decades, Obituary has remained a defining force in extreme metal, expertly balancing devastating heaviness with varied tempos. Their enduring legacy continues to inspire generations of death metal artists worldwide.
