Glenn Gould (1932–1982) stands as one of the most influential Canadian pianists of the 20th century, renowned for his revolutionary interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach’s keyboard works. Born on September 25, 1932, Gould mesmerized audiences and critics alike with his extraordinary technical mastery and a unique ability to highlight the intricate polyphony that defines Bach’s music. While Bach formed the cornerstone of his legacy, Gould’s repertoire was impressively diverse, spanning from early Baroque composers like Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Orlando Gibbons, and William Byrd, to classical giants such as Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, and Brahms, and extending further to modern composers including Arnold Schoenberg, Paul Hindemith, and Richard Strauss.

Gould deliberately distanced himself from the Romantic piano tradition, notably avoiding composers like Liszt, Schumann, and Chopin. At just 31, he shocked the music world by retiring from public concerts to focus exclusively on studio recordings, where he could refine his sound and explore creative projects without distraction.
