About The Style Council

The Style Council was a British band formed in 1983 by Paul Weller, following his decision to dissolve The Jam at their commercial peak to pursue a more soulful, jazz, and R&B-influenced sound. Teaming up with keyboardist Mick Talbot, formerly of The Merton Parkas, Weller crafted a sophisticated fusion of American R&B and European pop sensibilities. This fresh direction often featured synthesizers and drum machines, underpinning politically charged lyrics that addressed issues like racism, unemployment, and social inequality.

The group quickly found success with their debut single, "Speak Like a Child" (1983), which reached number four on the UK charts. This momentum carried through with hits such as "The Money-Go-Round" and the EP "Paris," both making impressive chart showings. Their first album, "Cafe Bleu" (1984), was widely praised for its ambitious blend of jazz, soul, rap, and pop, reaching number five in the UK and giving them their first US hit with "My Ever Changing Moods."

Following the chart-topping "Our Favourite Shop" (1985), The Style Council's commercial appeal declined. Albums like "The Cost of Loving" (1987) and "Confessions of a Pop Group" (1988) received mixed to poor reviews despite increasingly elaborate arrangements. After Polydor rejected their house music-influenced final recordings, the band disbanded in 1990. The Style Council left an enduring legacy as pioneers of sophisticated pop intertwined with socially conscious themes, paving the way for Weller's successful solo career.
