About Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston, born Whitney Elizabeth Houston on August 9, 1963, in Newark, New Jersey, remains one of the most iconic and influential voices in music history. Raised in a musically gifted family—her mother, Cissy Houston, was a renowned gospel and R&B singer, and her cousin Dionne Warwick also found fame in the industry—Whitney’s talent shone early. By age 11, she was already performing solo in her church choir, later touring with her mother and supporting artists like Chaka Khan and Lou Rawls as a teenager.

Discovered by Clive Davis in 1983, Whitney Houston rocketed to stardom with her 1985 debut album, "Whitney Houston," which became the best-selling debut by a female artist in the U.S. The album featured enduring hits such as "You Give Good Love," "Saving All My Love for You," "How Will I Know," and "The Greatest Love of All," earning her critical acclaim and her first Grammy Awards. Her follow-up album, "Whitney" (1987), made history as the first album by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200. It produced an unprecedented run of seven consecutive number-one singles, including the beloved dance anthem "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)."

Houston's crossover appeal was cemented with her role in the 1992 film "The Bodyguard" and its soundtrack. Her powerhouse rendition of Dolly Parton’s "I Will Always Love You" dominated the charts for 14 weeks and became one of the best-selling singles ever.
