About EMA

Erika M. Anderson, known by her stage name EMA, is a distinctive voice in contemporary music, blending experimental soundscapes with emotionally raw songwriting. Hailing from South Dakota, EMA moved to Los Angeles at eighteen, where she initially developed her innovative guitar techniques and vocal style while performing with the folk-noise collective Amps for Christ in the late 1990s. In 2004, she co-founded the psychedelic folk duo Gowns with Ezra Buchla, releasing three albums before their disbandment in 2010.

Launching her solo career that same year, EMA released the EP "Little Sketches on Tape" (2010), followed by the critically acclaimed debut album "Past Life Martyred Saints" (2011). The album’s haunting melodies and evocative lyrics propelled her to headline tours across North America and Europe, establishing her as a formidable presence in the indie and experimental music scenes. Among her standout works is the ambitious single "Grey Ship," featuring a 17-minute reimagining of Robert Johnson's "Kind Hearted Woman."

Her sophomore album, "The Future's Void" (2014), released through Matador Records, explored themes of virtual reality, consumerism, and identity. EMA expanded this project into multimedia exhibitions, including an Oculus Rift installation showcased at MoMA PS1 and the Barbican in London. Continuing her collaboration with producer Jacob Portrait of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, she released "Exile in the Outer Ring" (2017), an album confronting issues such as nationalism, poverty, and alienation rooted in the American Midwest. Throughout her career, EMA has remained a fearless innovator, using her music and art to illuminate complex social and personal realities.
