About Pete Tong

Pete Tong, born in Dartford, Kent in 1960, is a pioneering figure who helped shape the global landscape of electronic dance music. Initially a drummer, he transitioned to DJing in the late 1970s, honing his craft as a mobile DJ and gaining early exposure on pirate radio. His role as an A&R representative at London Records in the early 1980s proved pivotal, especially after championing Chicago house music—a genre he helped introduce to UK audiences through the landmark 1986 compilation "The House Sound of Chicago, Vol. 1."

As founder of FFRR Records, Pete Tong propelled club anthems like D Mob’s "We Call It Acieeed" and Salt-N-Pepa’s "Push It" into the mainstream. His breakthrough as a tastemaker came with BBC Radio 1, where since 1991 he has hosted the seminal weekly shows Essential Selection and Essential Mix. These programs became essential listening for dance music fans worldwide, spotlighting emerging artists and trends. Tong’s "Essential New Tune" picks regularly turned into chart-topping hits, cementing his reputation as the ultimate curator.

Beyond radio, Tong’s DJ residencies at iconic venues such as Ibiza’s Pacha have solidified his status on the club scene. More recently, he reimagined classic dance tracks with symphonic projects like "Classic House" (2016) and "Ibiza Classics" (2017), both certified gold in the UK, bridging electronic beats with orchestral grandeur. Continually evolving, Pete Tong also produces tech-house music and currently hosts "Pete Tong’s House Nation" on BBC Radio 2, maintaining his enduring influence as an ambassador for electronic dance music worldwide.
