About Arab Strap

Emerging from Glasgow’s vibrant mid-1990s music scene, Arab Strap quickly distinguished themselves as one of Scotland’s most influential alternative rock acts. Founded in 1995 by Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton, the duo crafted a unique sound marked by brutally honest, often raw narratives about sex, drugs, and complex relationships. Moffat’s distinctive Scottish brogue delivered these stories over minimalist electronic beats and sparse guitar arrangements, setting them apart from contemporaries like Belle & Sebastian and Mogwai.

Arab Strap’s breakthrough came with their 1998 album "Philophobia," which featured a melancholic, minimalist style underscored by drum machines and stripped-back guitars. Over the years, their music evolved, becoming richer and more textured. This shift is evident in albums like "The Red Thread" (2001) and "The Last Romance" (2005), the latter originally intended as their final statement before disbanding in 2006.

During their hiatus, both members pursued successful solo careers but reunited for live performances in the 2010s. This renewed collaboration culminated in the release of "As Days Get Dark" (2021), their seventh studio album, which showcased a mature, polished sound reaffirming Arab Strap’s enduring legacy in Scottish music. Their candid storytelling and evolving sound continue to resonate, making Arab Strap a cornerstone of alternative rock with a lasting cultural impact.
