About Émilie Simon

Émilie Simon, born in Montpellier, France, in 1978, is a pioneering figure in electronic music known for her unique blend of classical vocal training and avant-garde electronic pop. Raised in a musical household—her mother a pianist and father a sound engineer—Simon honed her craft early, studying voice at a conservatory before advancing to early music at the Sorbonne and electronic composition at IRCAM’s prestigious Centre Pompidou program. This rich educational background informs her ethereal, delicate vocal style, often likened to Björk, Kate Bush, and Claudine Longet, and underpins her innovative approach to sound.

Simon’s breakthrough came with her self-titled debut album (2003), which received critical acclaim and won the Victoire de la Musique award for Best Electronica Album. She gained international prominence composing the evocative soundtrack for the documentary "March of the Penguins" (2005), earning another Victoire de la Musique and a César nomination. Building on this momentum, her 2006 album "Végétal" pushed experimental boundaries by incorporating natural plant sounds, blending musique concrète with electronic textures.

Her discography further includes "The Flower Book" (2006), a compilation designed to introduce her work to wider audiences, the live album "Olympia" (2007), and "The Big Machine" (2009), which marked a shift toward English-language lyrics and expanded her international reach. Through her seamless fusion of classical tradition and cutting-edge experimentation, Émilie Simon remains a compelling and influential artist in contemporary music.
