About Tony Kofi

Tony Kofi stands as one of Britain’s most acclaimed saxophonists, celebrated for his fiery hard-bop style and masterful command of both tenor and baritone saxophones. Rising to prominence after winning the BBC Jazz Award for Album of the Year in 2005 and Best Saxophonist in 2008, Kofi has firmly established himself as a vital force in contemporary jazz.

Throughout his dynamic career, he has collaborated with jazz greats such as Courtney Pine, Donald Byrd, Eddie Henderson, Abdullah Ibrahim, Ornette Coleman, and ensembles including the World Saxophone Quartet, Gary Crosby’s Nu Troop, and Jazz Jamaica. His versatility extends to big band work with leaders like David Murray, Sam Rivers, Andrew Hill, and Julian Joseph. Kofi’s reach also crosses into crossover projects with artists like Macy Gray and Harry Connick Jr., showcasing his broad musical appeal.

As a bandleader, Tony Kofi spearheads several influential groups, including the Tony Kofi Quartet, the Sphinx Trio, the Future Passed Trio, and co-founded the Monk Liberation Front with pianist Jonathan Gee—a project dedicated to honoring Thelonious Monk’s legacy. Recent projects highlight his continuous innovation with ventures like Alex Webb’s Café Society Swing, Larry Bartley’s JustUS Quartet, and the collaborative album "Aggregation" with Alan Barnes. Tony Kofi and the Organisation, featuring his baritone saxophone leadership, alongside tributes such as "Portrait of Cannonball," further affirm his status as a pioneering and enduring figure within the jazz landscape.
