About The Human League

The Human League, pioneers of synth-pop, originated in Sheffield, England, in 1977. Founded by synthesizer players Martyn Ware and Ian Marsh, the group’s early sound was shaped by experimental electronic melodies and the innovative visuals of Adrian Wright. Philip Oakey soon joined as lead vocalist, expanding their sonic palette. Their debut single, "Being Boiled" (1978), became an underground sensation, leading to the Kraftwerk-inspired album "Reproduction" (1979) and the commercially successful "Travelogue" (1980).

In 1980, creative differences led Ware and Marsh to depart and form Heaven 17. Philip Oakey then revitalized the band by bringing in teenagers Susanne Sulley and Joanne Catherall as vocalists, bassist Ian Burden, and former Rezillos member Jo Callis. This lineup achieved international acclaim with the 1981 release of "Dare!," featuring the global hit "Don't You Want Me." The album solidified The Human League’s status as synth-pop icons.

While their 1984 album "Hysteria" did not match previous triumphs, the band rebounded in the U.S. with "Crash" (1986), produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, which included the No. 1 hit "Human." Despite fluctuating chart success in subsequent decades, The Human League maintained a lasting presence with albums like "Secrets" (2001) and "Credo" (2011), the latter reflecting their Sheffield roots with production by local group I Monster. Celebrated for merging infectious pop hooks with cutting-edge electronic sounds, The Human League continue to influence generations of artists and remain emblematic figures in the evolution of electronic music.
