About The Breeders

The Breeders, formed in 1989 by Pixies bassist Kim Deal and Throwing Muses guitarist Tanya Donelly, quickly became pivotal figures in the early ’90s alternative rock scene. Conceived as a creative outlet for their undeveloped ideas, the band’s name—borrowed from LGBT slang for heterosexuals—reflected their playful edge. Their debut album, "Pod" (1990), recorded with Steve Albini at Edinburgh’s Palladium studio, introduced a spacious, experimental sound paired with catchy hooks, earning critical acclaim and reaching number 22 on the UK charts.

Following Donelly’s departure in 1991, Kim’s twin sister Kelley Deal joined, solidifying the lineup that propelled The Breeders to mainstream success with their platinum-selling second album, "Last Splash" (1993). Anchored by the iconic single "Cannonball," which peaked at number two on the Alternative Airplay chart, the album blended elements of country, surf, reggae, and grunge, offering a mischievous yet accessible vibe. Extensive touring included sharing stages with Nirvana and performing at Lollapalooza, cementing their place in alternative rock history.

After facing challenges like Kelley’s rehabilitation and pursuing side projects such as the Amps and the Josephine Wiggs Experience, the band returned with the raw, minimalist albums "Title TK" (2002) and "Mountain Battles" (2008). They reunited the classic lineup for anniversary tours and released "All Nerve" (2018), their first album in 25 years, celebrated for its toughness and emotional depth, featuring collaborations with artists like Courtney Barnett. Marking their enduring influence, The Breeders commemorated "Last Splash"’s 30th anniversary in 2023 with a remastered edition including unreleased tracks co-written by Pixies’ Black Francis, illustrating their lasting legacy in alternative rock.
