About The Darkness

The Darkness is an English hard rock band that burst onto the music scene at the dawn of the 21st century, reinvigorating the flamboyant style and bombastic sound of late-'70s rock. Fronted by the charismatic Justin Hawkins, whose soaring falsetto and theatrical stage presence—marked by glittering leotards and acrobatic moves inspired by icons like David Lee Roth and Freddie Mercury—became the band’s trademark, The Darkness quickly earned a passionate following in London’s pub circuit despite early skepticism from the British press.

The band's origins trace back to a pivotal New Year’s Eve 1999 karaoke session, where Justin’s electrifying rendition of Queen’s "Bohemian Rhapsody" inspired the formation of the group. Alongside Justin were his brother Dan Hawkins on guitar, bassist Frankie Poullain, and drummer Ed Graham, who together transitioned from their previous synth-pop project Empire into a full-blown rock spectacle. Their breakthrough arrived in 2002 with the EP "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," followed by high-profile support slots for legends like Deep Purple and Def Leppard, catapulting them to a major record deal with Atlantic Records.

In 2003, The Darkness released their debut album, "Permission to Land," which topped UK charts and became the first debut number one since Coldplay, solidifying their place in modern rock history. Hits like "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" and the festive "Christmas Time (Don’t Let the Bells End)" showcased their catchy melodies blended with unapologetic classic rock flair. After lineup shifts and Justin Hawkins’ temporary departure in 2006 for rehabilitation, the original members reunited in 2011. Subsequent albums—"Hot Cakes" (2012), "Last of Our Kind" (2015), and "Pinewood Smile" (2017)—with new drummer Rufus Taylor carrying the mantle, reaffirmed The Darkness’s enduring appeal and their dynamic, theatrical brand of rock that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
