About James Ruskin

James Ruskin, a Croydon-born producer and DJ, has been a defining force in British techno since the early 1990s. He began his DJ career in 1991 and stepped into music production in 1994 alongside Richard Polson. Together, they co-founded the influential Blueprint Records in 1996, a label recognized for its hard-edged, uncompromising techno sound that fuses the raw intensity of Birmingham’s industrial scene with intricate, innovative sound design reminiscent of Autechre.

Ruskin’s solo debut came with the 12" release as Void in 1995, leading to his first full-length album, "Further Design" (1998), which set the stage for a prolific output. He gained wider acclaim through albums such as "Point 2" (2000) and "Into Submission" (2001) on Germany’s renowned Tresor label. After a hiatus following Polson’s passing in 2006, Ruskin returned with the compelling "The Dash" (2008).

His collaborative projects further cement his status in techno. Teaming up with Karl O’Connor under the name O/V/R, Ruskin delivered notable works like "Interior" (2009) and "Post-Traumatic Son" (2010), the latter attracting remixes from techno legends Robert Hood and Marcel Dettmann. Additionally, his experimental side shines in The Fear Ratio, a partnership with Mark Broom that produced "Light Box" (2011) and "Refuge of a Twisted Soul" (2015) on Skam.

After a five-year gap in solo releases, Ruskin made a strong comeback with "Reality Broadcast Off" and "Siklikal" (both 2019), followed by "Consumer Patterns" (2020) on Blueprint. Through consistent innovation and partnerships, James Ruskin remains a vital architect of contemporary techno’s evolving landscape.
