About Richard Smallwood

Richard Smallwood, born on November 30, 1948, in Atlanta, Georgia, is a towering figure in gospel music whose influence spans more than four decades. A gifted pianist, singer, songwriter, and producer, Smallwood honed his craft at Howard University, earning degrees in vocal performance and piano. Among his notable classmates were future stars Donny Hathaway, Debbie Allen, and Phylicia Rashad. After a brief tenure teaching music at the University of Maryland, Smallwood devoted himself fully to his musical career.

His breakthrough came with the formation of the Richard Smallwood Singers and their 1982 self-titled debut album, which impressively remained on Billboard’s gospel charts for 87 weeks. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, the group released numerous successful recordings, solidifying Smallwood’s reputation for blending traditional gospel with contemporary sounds. In 1996, he shifted focus to his choir, Vision, debuting with the live album "Adoration: Live in Atlanta" through Verity Records.

Richard Smallwood’s masterful compositions have transcended gospel, attracting renditions by legendary artists such as Whitney Houston, Destiny’s Child, Kelly Price, Gerald Levert, and Aretha Franklin. His ambitious double album "Anthology Live" (2015) captures the depth and vitality of his enduring legacy. Celebrated for innovative arrangements and heartfelt expression, Richard Smallwood remains a cornerstone in inspirational music worldwide.
