About Miles Davis

Miles Davis stands as one of jazz’s most transformative figures, with a career spanning over five decades beginning in the mid-1940s. Born in 1926 into East St. Louis’s black middle class, he grew up in a musical household—his mother was a music teacher—while his father was a dental surgeon. Davis discovered the trumpet at age 12 and quickly immersed himself in the rising bebop scene, influenced by trailblazers like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. Moving to New York in 1944, he briefly studied at Juilliard before abandoning formal education to dive into the city’s vibrant jazz milieu.

Davis’s innovative spirit flourished early with the formation of a nonet in 1948, whose groundbreaking recordings were later compiled as the landmark "Birth of the Cool" (1957), laying the foundation for cool jazz. His collaborations with arranger Gil Evans yielded critically celebrated albums including "Miles Ahead" (1957) and "Sketches of Spain" (1960). Perhaps his most iconic work, "Kind of Blue" (1959), remains the best-selling jazz album ever, showcasing modal jazz and featuring contributions from John Coltrane and others.

Throughout the 1960s, Davis pushed boundaries with his second quintet, featuring Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. The late 1960s saw his shift toward electric jazz-rock fusion, culminating in the seminal "Bitches Brew" (1970), which broadened jazz’s audience and influenced emerging fusion groups like Weather Report. Despite personal struggles, Davis returned strong in the 1980s, scoring multiple Grammys with albums such as "Tutu" (1986).

Miles Davis’s restless creativity and willingness to evolve ensured his enduring legacy as a visionary who reshaped jazz and inspired generations worldwide.
