About Wilco

Wilco, formed in 1994 in Chicago, rose from the ashes of the influential alt-country band Uncle Tupelo after its breakup. Fronted by Jeff Tweedy and joined by Ken Coomer, John Stirratt, Max Johnston, and later guitarist Jay Bennett, Wilco initially embraced a rootsy country-rock sound. Their debut album, "A.M." (1995), laid the groundwork for their evolving style. With the ambitious double album "Being There" (1996), the band expanded their sonic horizons, blending psychedelia, soul, orchestral elements, and R&B influences, earning critical acclaim and broadening their appeal.

Wilco’s collaboration with Billy Bragg on the "Mermaid Avenue" projects (1998, 2000) creatively set Woody Guthrie’s unreleased lyrics to music, showcasing their artistic versatility. The 1999 release "Summerteeth" marked another creative leap, despite modest commercial success. Significant lineup changes—including Glenn Kotche replacing Ken Coomer on drums in 2001—preceded the turbulent recording of "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" (2002). Faced with label disputes, Wilco famously bought back the album’s master tapes and independently released it via Nonesuch Records, solidifying their indie rock legacy.

Throughout the 2000s, Wilco’s sound matured with acclaimed albums like "A Ghost Is Born" (2004), "Sky Blue Sky" (2007), which reached number five on U.S. charts, and "Wilco (The Album)" (2009). Embracing independence, they launched their own label, dBpm Records, releasing "The Whole Love" (2011), followed by the surprise free album "Star Wars" (2015) and the introspective "Schmilco" (2016). Enduring lineup shifts and Jeff Tweedy’s personal struggles, Wilco remains a pioneering force in alternative and indie rock, celebrated for their continual innovation and resilience.
